Follow the stream of the river Tagus in Lisbon
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal with 500.000 inhabitants and a population of nearly 3 million in the urban area. A very rich cultural city with many historical and contemporary influences. It is famous for its cobblestone pavements and an egg custard pastry ‘Pastéis de Belém’. What to do if you only have one day in Lisbon? We have chosen to walk along the river Tagus. Surprised by all that got on our path. The goal was to reach the Torre de Belém on the north banks of the river Tagus. This is an 8 kilometer walk from the port of Lisbon. You can also take a bike or an…

Tour around the island Sint Maarten and plane-spotting
Sint Maarten is part of the Netherlands Antilles. I was very excited to visit this island for its Caribbean Dutch culture and for the plane-spotting. We walked from the schip to the town Philipsburg. It is a 10 minutes walk. My first impression. There are many of duty free shops in Philipsburg, to buy: licor, cigarettes, parfum and jewelry. Great bay has a beautiful white sand beach and the town has many well-kept colonial buildings. Sint Maarten was a major exporter of salt The island has a French and a Dutch part. Sint Maarten is named by Columbus who passed by the island on November 11th 1493. This day is…

Feel the rhythm of Martinique
I was not expecting much, but I fel in love with this beautiful island of Martinique. The moment we got off the schip, I felt the rhythm of the colorful open and friendly people. Fort de France is the capital with 101.000 inhabitants of the french department of Martinique. People speak French and you can use the Euro. Before 1902 Saint Pierre was the capital. In that year an eruption of the volcano Mont Pelée destroyed Saint Pierre and its 30.000 inhabitants in it. Only two people survived. The Caribbean island of Martinique was already charted by Columbus in 1493, but he had no interest in this island. Sugar, rum…

Experience the beautiful evergreen Azores
Ponta Delgada is the economical center and biggest municipality of the evergreen Azores Islands. It is a city of 70.000 inhabitants on the Island of San Miguel. The islands are an autonomous region and part of Portugal. People speak Portuguese and they pay with the Euro. It is 785 nautical miles (1454 kilometers) west from Lisbon. I was very excited to visit this evergreen island for the first time. We decided to take public transportation. We had a two-day stopover in the Azores, so we had no scheduled time to be back on board. The bus ticket was very cheap. We only had to pay €3,50 per person. The bus…
